Introduction of New Freestyle Libre CGMs

In an exciting development for the diabetes care community, three new Freestyle Libre continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems are set to arrive in the US market this year. These include the Freestyle Libre 3 Plus, Abbott Rio, and Abbott Lingo, with the potential for them to be available as early as this month at local pharmacies.

The Announcement and Unique Features

The most recent CGM from Abbott was the Freestyle Libre 3, but these new models promise a range of enhancements and features. Each of these devices offers different advantages, catering to various user needs, which I will explore in detail below.

Freestyle Libre 3 Plus

Revealed at the American Diabetes Association Conference in June 2024, the Freestyle Libre 3 Plus retains the design of its predecessor but extends the sensor wear time from 14 to 15 days. This subtle yet significant upgrade promises users a little less hassle in managing their CGMs.

Sizing and Sensor Accuracy

While the sensor’s size remains unchanged, some may have hoped for a thinner design. Notably, the sensor accuracy is quantified by the mean absolute relative difference (MARD), which stands at 8.2% for the new model, slightly higher than the Freestyle Libre 3’s 7.9%. However, it is more accurate in lower blood sugar ranges, a critical factor for many users.

Integration with Insulin Pumps

The Freestyle Libre 3 Plus is labeled as an “iCGM,” indicating its pre-approval to integrate with insulin pumps. While the integration process is underway with various systems like Omnipod 5, the final steps rest with the insulin pump manufacturers.

Freestyle Libre Rio

The Freestyle Libre Rio is tailored for type 2 diabetes patients aged 18 and above. This over-the-counter (OTC) product does not require a prescription, making it easily accessible. While other features mirror those of the Freestyle Libre 2, more details on its size and specific functionalities will be clarified upon its release.

Introduction of the Abbott Lingo

The Abbott Lingo represents a new category, serving as a “lifestyle CGM.” This product is designed for anyone curious about their blood sugar levels, regardless of diabetes status. Its focus is on lifestyle monitoring rather than management or diagnosis.

Technical Aspects of Abbott Lingo

This device is notable for its integration with a smartphone application that tracks glucose spikes, termed the “Lingo count,” helping users adjust their lifestyle choices through diet and exercise. Currently, it retails in the UK with plans to launch in the US, although it comes at a premium price.

More on Freestyle Libre Technology

Overall, the Freestyle Libre series has witnessed rapid expansion and innovation over the past two years. With these new models, Abbott continues to diversify its offerings, providing users with a wider range of options suited to different monitoring needs and lifestyle goals.

Conclusion and Further Information

The upcoming releases of these new Freestyle Libre devices signify an exciting future for diabetes technology. For more information on Freestyle Libre products or to keep updated on their availability, users are encouraged to stay informed and consult with their healthcare providers.
